Analyst: Apple sold 600-700 thousand iPads the first day We don’t know for sure exactly how many iPads Apple had available to sell on Saturday, but one analyst says the number beat his previous expectations.

Piper Jaffray Senior Research Analyst, Gene Munster, on Saturday said he believes Apple sold between 600-700 thousand iPads on the first day. This includes the pre-orders that would have been coming in since March 12.

These new sales predictions are well above the 200-300 thousand units Munster previously expected Apple to sell on the first day.

iPad launch: Boston's Boylston Street storeThe crystal-clear facade of Boston’s Boylston Street Apple Store* beckoned and a slew of customers heeded the call this morning to greet the iPad. By the time I arrived at 8am, a line had formed down the street and around the corner — a few hundred people at least. A second line for pre-order customers formed later in the morning, and by 9am was just as long as the first line. The store’s interior was hidden by a black curtain that ran the length of the building.

The mood was jovial, with everyone discussing their plans for the new device. Apple Store employees were moving up and down the line, making chit-chat and offering candy, water and coffee. The weather was fine (unlike the rainy iPhone launch), if not a little cold.

The doors opened at 9, with blue-shirted workers cheering and whooping it up as we’ve seen before. I got into the store around 9:45 or 10 (pre-order customers were let in first), so all in all the wait wasn’t very long.

High-quality unboxing photos of Apple's new iPadAs is expected with any Apple product, the box is simple and elegant. The packaging assures that the iPad is the center attraction — when you pull the lid off, it’s all iPad.

Removing the iPad reveals the manual underneath, and lifting that out gives access to the USB cable and wall charger. Setup is quick, easy and simple. The iPad needs to be activated through iTunes, a very fast process that allows you to sync photos, videos, music and existing iPhone/iPod touch applications you might already have on your desktop.

The all aluminum back of the Wi-Fi model looks great (I always preferred that look), but if the first-gen iPhone is any indication, you’ll probably want a case for this investment before it gets scratched up. Upon booting the App Store, users are immediately asked if they want to download the iBooks application. It installs quickly over Wi-Fi and works well with a clean interface and very responsive touch controls.

Probably the best thing for a touch typist like myself: compatibility with any Bluetooth keyboard. I could totally see myself getting some work done with this thing, now that I can actually type fast and accurately. The soft keyboard works well enough, but because you can’t rest your fingers on the screen, you’re forced to sort of hunt and peck. Maybe this will improve over time.

With ingesting all of the iPad hype over the past few weeks, I’ve decided to get one now rather than later. Tomorrow I will be attempting to buy one of the supposedly 5 16GB Apple iPad models available at Best Buy. I’ll try to post updates as I am waiting in line. If the line is too long when I arrive, it’s back home to order online and wait patiently.

Are you buying an iPad tomorrow? Where? What model? Share your stories with us.

Update 1:12pm:
With a slight delay in the arrival of the iPad to Best Buy caused by a flood in Kentucky, I was able to buy my iPad this morning just before noon. After playing around with a floor model for about 1/2 hour, I realized this was going to be a worthwhile purchase for me personally. The iPad isn’t for everybody.

Everybody seemed excited, even the Best Buy employees in charge of the iPads today. I was interviewed by a local newspaper reporter, of course I had to plug iPadLot. I’ll post the link to the article should it be posted tomorrow as I was told. I also ended up answering questions from a couple of people who weren’t familiar with the iPad. One guy didn’t realize it was on sale today, but loved everything about it as I showed him some of the features.

I’ll post some pictures soon. And don’t expect many iPad news updates today. I have a date with destiny…

Update 8:47am: 5th in line!

The lines are up, the barricades are ready, and we’re just a couple of hours away from the first cash transaction that will end with someone walking out the door with an iPad. That’s just too long to wait, however, to give you this unboxing and introductory walkthrough — we were fortunate enough to sit down with a demo unit and we’ve got several videos for your viewing pleasure.

Video number one appears above, and the other videos appear in the posts linked below. We are deeply appreciative of the opportunity to get our grubby palms on the iPad early enough to get these clips to you now. They may not have the smooth production values of Apple’s walkthroughs, but they were made with love.

What’s SplitBrowser?

Surfing the Internet on your iPad just got better. Experience two web pages at the same time, with two independent toolbars, a division bar you can resize your pages, and viewing in portrait or landscape mode. It’s all up to you.

This app offers you an ultimate web experience. It allows you to stream a video while checking out your emails. If you want to focus on the film, try the full screen mode. Listen to music on one page while surfing the web on another, you can even look up the biography of the artist you’re listening to.
